Com 996 metros de comprimento,construido em aclive e com curva é considerado uma proesa da engenharia da época,foi construído em 1882 pelo engenheiro inglês Herbert E. Hunt, e inaugurado em 5 de março de 1884, pelo Imperador Dom Pedro II, para fazer a ligação entre os Estados de São Paulo e Minas Gerais para servir a Estrada de Ferro Minas and Rio Railway.No dia 22 de junho de 1884 ocorreram a inauguração da Estrada de Ferro Minas and Rio e a primeira viagem de trem que teve como convidados de honra os imperadores Dom Pedro II e Dona Tereza Cristina, juntamente com a princesa Isabel, o Conde D´Eu e o Major Novaes, fundador de Cruzeiro,fizeram o percurso entre Cruzeiro-SP e Tres Corações-MG num total de 170 KM. Em junho de 1882, o Imperador D. Pedro II e sua comitiva visitaram a cidade de Cruzeiro-SP, com o objetivo de inspecionar as obras de construção da Minas and Rio Railway e do Grande Túnel. O Túnel foi, também, local estratégico na Revolução Constitucionalista de 1932, na qual foi frente de batalhas e um dos pontos mais visados pela tropas inimigas.Tendo tombado mortos cerca de 97 homens, naquele que seria um dos mais sangrentos capítulos da revolução de 1932.
